Aims & Objectives

To host a series of local and national exhibitions from 2009 to 2012, as well as a touring exhibition at mainstream galleries in a number of provinces.

To publicize the SIX AH WI Reflections Series through a strategically developed and creatively orchestrated media plan that incorporates community and mainstream media.

To recruit and bring together the creative energies of artists and curators of African-Canadian heritage from different provinces who can contribute to the series’ development and its staging.

To explore the question of Diaspora and Identity from historical and contemporary perspectives, through a series of exhibitions, a symposium, awards event, and an education program.

To identify and expose the transformative nature, function and role of the visual arts, before, during and after emancipation, through an artist’s residency program within key Diaspora geographic locations.

To build partnerships with funders, art galleries, educational institutions and museums through a team of curators from a number of provinces.

To visit noteworthy Black cultural institutions and art festivals in the Caribbean, USA, Africa and Europe, to view similar themed shows and to acquire information from curators in these regions about their successes.
To secure the participation of curators from the Caribbean, Africa, USA and Europe, in the launch of the exhibition in Canada in 2012 and the planning of the international tours.

To create a legacy of opening doors for other artists to access mainstream galleries and to build a tradition of hard work, creative exploration, discipline, dedication and professionalism for other African Canadian artists to follow.
