Components
Artists Residency Program (2012) -Getting Connected and Breaking the Isolation-African-Canadian visual artists have been working historically in isolation of each other nationally, regionally and internationally. The residency program is about breaking the isolation and bring together with fellow visual artists from the various African-Diaspora for the Point of Return exhibition in 2012. The residency program will enable the artists to explore new creative ideas, engage in critical discourse, develop innovative artistic concepts and gain knowledge about the role of visual arts in new and different environments. Finally, the residency program will act as a catalyst for the artists in focusing and understanding not only the creative concepts of Point of Return, but also the broader culture from which the artists draw their inspiration through the exchange of knowledge. Symposium - (2012) An Enquiry into African-Canadian Diaspora and Identity-The symposium will look at how African creative art forms, including those gleaned from African-Diaspora colonies, have influenced modernity around the world. It will also show how these art forms have impacted global culture. The symposium will address the issues of Diaspora and identity through discourse, which will include art history, political developments, Black cultural studies (geographic), science & technology (DNA-tracing of family history background). The underlying objective of the symposium is to look at how African-Canadian diasporic culture from within the context of the politics of representation, identity and power, as well as its configuration within the current art historical discourse locally, nationally and internationally Education Programming (2012) - The art education program for the Point of Return exhibition will engage teachers and students in the discourse surrounding the historical and contemporary contribution of African-Canadian artists to Canada. Designed to give students and teachers a better understanding of the broad cultural tapestry of the African-Canadian community, the program will be both demonstrative and interactive, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions about the creative process. Why art is important to understanding another culture? How different genres of the arts influence each other. The role the arts play in contributing to the development of society and culture will be explored. Students and teachers will also examine how other cultures impact the arts as well as how artists and ideas have brought about changes within cultures and across racial and national lines. |
