SIX AH WI Art Collective

SIX AH WI Art Collective Association, meaning six of us, is a registered not-for-profit (2008) organization. The collective is comprised of two functioning bodies, which are the Board of Directors and the Executive Body of Artists. SAW was formed in Scarborough, Ontario in 1993 by 6 African-Canadian artists from various Caribbean backgrounds (Karen Richards, Georgia Fullerton, Merlyn Laveau-Regi, Barrington Robinson, Leyton Franklin and Ato Seitu). SIX AH WI Art Collective (SAW) grew out of a recognition that the creative ideas, concepts and works of African-Canadian visual artists need to be fostered, promoted and shared for the world to see.

The founding members of SAW also recognized that through the collective creative spirit of the Arts, we can critically examine the impact of communication and entertainment technologies on the contemporary visual arts form in relationship to audience perception and consumption.

The founding members also identified the importance of providing a platform from which artists can meet, create and plan, organize and developed. They came to the conclusion that artists must be proactive as a collective in developing programs and artistic and educational activities that will strengthen and inspire African-Canadian visual artists. The collective is also created to give members the opportunity to intervene and actively engage in the continuing discourse around creating contemporary art and engaging both the creative and general community by “Giving Visual Art a Voice” that is articulated through 6 principles, which are:

  1. Success through Excellence
